I am getting quite a bit of human initiated spam from India. Spammers are looking for blogs that have comments turned on that mention particular keywords. The paragraph they leave then tries to fool you into thinking they are a real poster. All they want is the link back to their spam site. Of course links are all nofollow’ed on wordpress anyway so there is no google juice, just potential users clicking through to their sites.

I have wp_hashcash installed, so the spammers are using a real browser with javascript turned on. Cheap labour I guess. This sort of manual spam is hard to detect automatically via the usual channels like akismet or javascript puzzle solving.

Here are some traces for others to see.

Thanks for your time to post this article.

I had a party for a significant birthday on the weekend. I really didn’t want people to go out and buy me a gift. What do I need as a gift that I don’t have already, or couldn’t go out and get if I so wanted ?

One thought was to suggest firstly that people didn’t need to buy me a gift. If people really wanted to purchase something I asked that they buy a truly useful gift at TEAR Australia’s http://www.usefulgifts.org.

What a lovely surprise resulted. Not only did people ignore the request not go buy something, they shopped at the web site and gave cash on the day. The total gifts given were as follows ;

4 x Safe Water, 4 x Food Security, 4 x Goat, 1 x Toilet, 1 x Tree Seedlings

I am touched and humbled by your generosity guys, thanks so much. It is the best gift I can think of. Not only have I always wanted a small flock of goats in my honour, but now I have a toilet with my name on it also !

Here is a shot from the party, with a real cow, sheep, horse, pig, dog and cat-thing that was also purchased in my honour.

In the interest of transparency, here are the PDFs that the web site sent when a gift was purchased. One goat was purchased via a printed form.

 casablanca

OK I realise that I will probably no longer have any movie cred once I admit that I only just saw Casablanca last night. My first thought was `wow this is so crisp’. Did they do something to make this 1943 black and white movie so clean and beautifully detailed ? It looks gorgeous.

It is hard to judge a movie filmed so long ago, especially when the art and technology of film making has moved so far. I did cringe at how the movie portrayed the war in a condescending Hollywood sort of way – glibly detailing how the war impacted `those foreigners over there in Africa and Europe’.

Still, it was nice to see those famous snippets I’ve seen over the years get put into context in the movie. Bogart is cynical, gruff and believable. Bergman is not the beauty perhaps one might expect of a movie nowadays but she was shot in soft light and her eyes sparkled in every shot.

So perhaps part of my movie education is now filled in.

“old-fashioned, romantic drama about love lost and love earned” sounds like a pretty dry but accurate summary to me. Lovely soft scenes of rural China. Saw this movie on the plane and watched it again via quickflix DVD. A really good storyline and Naomi Watts is fabulous. Lots of jibes about English Colonialism. Not a chick flick, much too grand and serious for that.

Bollywood meets Jane Austin. One of those movies where you aren’t sure if this was meant as a comedy or not. So this leaves you nervous wondering if you are meant to laugh, cringe or just enjoy the fluff piece that this is.

Jane Austin-philes will hate what has been done to their classic tale, but if you know that you are in for an over the top dance singsong in the style of Bollywood then you might just be able to enjoy this movie.

The mother of the 4 girls in the story makes this movie for me. She was sooo over the top obsessed with getting her girls married off. Her character was great. I got a hint that you were meant to just laugh and cringe your way through this when a shot with a choir singing in the background panned back to actually reveal the choir in full attire. Great cheesy stuff.

Australia is a big, long movie that will surely become a classic, but I would think firstly it will achieve this status overseas.

It is definitely worth seeing, only small criticism is that it is a little wooden. There were several audible swoons from the audience at the hunky Hugh Jackman. Kidman was credible too. A movie on a huge scale, I really hope they make their money back. Very positive depiction of aboriginal characters. A grand, romantic, action movie with some free history lessons thrown in.

No it’s not that there is a green tinge from the window. Nor is it the toothy grin from Dave.

Have a closer look at the black blobs in the corners.

I was wondering why my photos that afternoon had these black corners. Was my strap hanging over the lens so badly ? super vignetting ?what was going on ?

Only later did I realise that the lens hood was twisted around.

The Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM lens has a monster hood – mostly to cover the 70mm front end.

I’m still not sold on why I have to cart this monster plastic nose around with me. Apparently it will help stop vignetting and help with better saturated colours. The most convincing reason so far is that if you drop your camera, it will sacrifice itself for your lens. Even though the genuine Canon hood is a hefty $75 or so, it is cheap compared to nice glass like this baby.

Canon Air bags anyone ?

I must be thick, but I only just understood why the hood has 2 big leaves and 2 smaller ones. The reason is that the sensor is rectangular and in `widescreen mode’, and thus the short leaves cover the short ends of the sensor. If you rotate the hood, the long leaves cast a shadow directly over the `film’.

Now I’m off to go read a beginner’s guide to photography.

Recently I was in Mount Barker in the south west of W.A. In the car park near the tourist centre was a Banksia tree. I was totally blown away by how many different images of leaves, nuts and flowers could be seen on just one bush. So here we go a handful of shots from a single Banksia tree.

Opera Sings an Ode to Browsers Everywhere

Mr. von Tetzchner said that Opera’s engineers have developed a version of Opera Mini that can run on an Apple iPhone, but Apple won’t let the company release it because it competes with Apple’s own Safari browser.
